Sitemap Finder & Checker

Locate your XML sitemap and validate its structure for SEO health.

Paste your XML Sitemap content below to validate structure and identify errors.

How to Find and Validate XML Sitemaps

An XML Sitemap is a roadmap for search engines. It lists every page on your website that you want indexed. Without a valid sitemap, Google and Bing may miss new content or fail to understand your site structure. This tool combines a "Finder" to help you locate your sitemap and a "Checker" to ensure it is error-free.

Finding a Missing Sitemap

If you aren't sure where your sitemap is located, start with the Finder tab.

  • Standard Locations: Most CMS platforms (WordPress, Shopify, Wix) put sitemaps in predictable locations like /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml. This tool generates these links for your domain.
  • Robots.txt Declaration: The most reliable way to find a sitemap is to check the robots.txt file at the root of the domain. Webmasters often declare the sitemap location there for bots to find. You can paste your robots.txt content into the tool to extract this URL.

Validating Sitemap Health

Once you have your sitemap code, switch to the Checker tab. Simply pasting the code allows our engine to simulate how a search bot parses the file. We check for:

  • XML Syntax Errors: Broken tags or invalid characters that prevent parsing.
  • Protocol Mismatches: Ensuring all URLs match your site's protocol (HTTPS).
  • Structure: Identifying if it's a "Sitemap Index" (a list of other sitemaps) or a "URL Set" (a list of pages).
  • Tag Compliance: Checking for required <loc> tags and correct date formats in <lastmod>.
Pro Tip: A sitemap file cannot contain more than 50,000 URLs or exceed 50MB in size. If your site is larger than this, you must use a Sitemap Index file to group multiple smaller sitemaps.
