Decoding Your DNA: The Science of Inheritance
Genetics is the blueprint of life. Every physical characteristic you possess, from your eye color to your ability to roll your tongue, is determined by segments of DNA called genes. This tool uses the principles of Mendelian Genetics, established by Gregor Mendel in the 19th century, to predict how these genes are passed from parents to offspring.
Dominant vs. Recessive Traits
Most basic traits are controlled by two alleles (variants of a gene)—one from each parent.
- Dominant (B): Only requires one copy to show the trait (e.g., Brown eyes).
- Recessive (b): Requires two copies to show the trait (e.g., Blue eyes).
The Cost of Genetic Knowledge
With the rise of direct-to-consumer testing like 23andMe and AncestryDNA, genetic sequencing has become accessible to the masses. Basic ancestry tests often cost under $100, while comprehensive health screenings or clinical Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) can range from $300 to over $1,000 depending on the depth of analysis and medical oversight required.
Beyond Simple Genetics
While this tool simulates single-gene (monogenic) traits, most human characteristics are Polygenic, meaning they are influenced by multiple genes acting together. Height, skin color, and intelligence are complex traits that cannot be perfectly predicted by a simple Punnett square. Environmental factors (epigenetics) also play a massive role in how genes are expressed.
