How to Perform a Competitor Backlink Gap Analysis
In SEO, the quickest wins often come from replicating the success of your top competitors. A Backlink Gap Analysis (or Link Intersect) is the process of finding websites that link to your competitors but do not yet link to you.
Why is the "Link Gap" Important?
If a website links to your competitor, they have already demonstrated two things:
- They are interested in your niche/topic.
- They are willing to link to external resources.
This makes them "warm leads" for your link-building outreach. Unlike cold pitching random blogs, pitching to sites in your Link Gap has a significantly higher success rate because the relevance is already established.
How to Use This Tool
- Export Data: Use tools like Google Search Console, Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz to export your backlink list and your competitor's backlink list (CSV or Excel).
- Paste Data: Copy the column containing the "Referring Page URL" or "Referring Domain" and paste it into the respective text boxes above.
- Analyze: Click "Find Opportunity Gaps". The tool will strip the URLs down to their root domains (e.g., converting
blog.nytimes.com/articletonytimes.com) to ensure an accurate comparison. - Outreach: Focus on the "Link Gap" table. These are the domains you are missing. Visit these sites, find where they linked to your competitor, and pitch your (superior) content as a replacement or addition.
Logic Behind the Tool
This tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript Set logic. It performs a "Relative Complement" set operation (B \ A). It automatically handles subdomain normalization (stripping 'www') to prevent false negatives. This ensures that if you have a link from www.forbes.com and your competitor has one from forbes.com, the tool correctly identifies them as the same domain.
