How to Use the Anchor Text Distribution Tool

Understanding your anchor text profile is crucial for a healthy SEO strategy. Search engines like Google use anchor text—the clickable words in a hyperlink—to understand what a page is about. However, an unnatural distribution of these texts can trigger spam filters and result in ranking penalties.

1. Input Your Data

Start by entering your Target Domain (e.g., example.com). This helps the tool identify "Branded" anchors. If you are targeting a specific term, enter it in the "Target Keyword" field to detect Exact and Partial match anchors. Finally, paste your list of anchor texts from your backlink report (Ahrefs, Moz, Semrush, or GSC).

2. Interpreting the Results

The tool categorizes every line into one of five critical buckets:

  • Branded: Contains your brand name. A healthy profile is usually 50%+ branded.
  • Naked URLs: Raw links like https://example.com. These are very natural.
  • Generic: Words like "click here" or "website". These provide trust signals.
  • Exact Match: The exact keyword you want to rank for. Keep this low (often under 1-5%) to avoid over-optimization.
  • Partial Match: Your keyword mixed with other words. A safer way to include keywords.

3. Optimization Strategy

If the "Exact Match" bar turns red, your site might be at risk of a penalty. To fix this, build more Branded or Naked URL links to dilute the percentage. A natural profile is diverse, heavily branded, and not overly focused on "money keywords."

Why Anchor Text Matters for SEO

Post-Penguin algorithms look for patterns that indicate manipulation. If 50% of your backlinks say "Best Credit Card," Google assumes you bought those links. A natural site would have anchors like "BankName," "this article," "https://bankname.com," and varying partial matches. This tool helps you visualize that balance instantly.
