Understanding the Costs of Cryonics
Cryonics is the practice of preserving humans and animals at cryogenic temperatures in the hope that future technology can restore them to health. While it sounds like science fiction, it is a legal and logistical reality today. The costs involved are significant because they must cover three distinct phases:
1. Standby, Stabilization, and Transport (SST)
This is the emergency response. A team must be dispatched to your bedside to begin cooling and medication administration immediately upon legal death. This phase involves specialized equipment, personnel, and transportation (often air ambulance) to the cryonics facility.
2. Cryoprotection and Storage
Once at the facility, the patient undergoes perfusion with cryoprotectants (medical-grade antifreeze) to prevent ice crystal formation. They are then cooled to -196°C and placed in a vacuum-insulated dewar of liquid nitrogen.
3. The Patient Care Trust
The bulk of the fee goes into a conservative investment trust. The interest earned on this capital pays for the indefinite maintenance cost (liquid nitrogen refills, security, and facility upkeep). This ensures you stay preserved even if the cryonics company faces financial difficulties.
Whole Body vs. Neuro
Some organizations offer "Neuro" preservation, where only the head is preserved. The rationale is that the brain holds your identity and memory, and a future society capable of reviving you could likely regrow or build a new body. This option is often significantly cheaper due to reduced storage space and chemical requirements.
